FAQ

Basic banking services

The bank refuses to open an account for me because I have a bad credit rating. Does it have the right to do that?
Under Canadian law, a bad credit rating or a bankruptcy is not a justifiable reason for refusing to open an account. You are neither obliged to have a job nor to deposit money upon opening the account. However, this law does not apply to the Desjardins credit union.

Note: a bank or a credit union can refuse to open an account in certain circumstances, particularly if they have reason to believe that the account will be used for fraudulent ends
