FAQs
Identity Theft
I am a victim of identity theft. What can I do?
Answer: As soon as you realize that you have been a victim of identity theft, take the appropriate steps.
- Quickly contact the Équifax (1 800 465-7166) and Trans Union (in Québec: 1 877 713-3393) credit agencies. At your request, these agencies will correct your credit file, then add a fraud warning to it. Consequently, if somebody tries to open an account using your name and there is a credit check, they will contact you.
- Cancel your debit and credit cards at the institutions that issued them. It would be very useful to make up a list containing all the telephone numbers of the companies to be contacted in the event of loss or theft of your cards.
- Regard a lost credit card as a stolen, even if you find it.
- Get new cards and change your passwords and/or your personal identification numbers.
- Contact the issuers of all your identity cards and inform them of the situation. The most important of these are Human Resources Development Canada for your social insurance card, the SAAQ for your driver’s licence, the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec for your health insurance card, the Office du Directeur de l’état civil for your birth certificate, and Passport Canada for your passport.
- Contact all the public utility companies you have an account with and explain the situation to them. These companies will inform you about their policies.
- If you suspect that somebody is intercepting your mail, contact Canada Post Corporation by e-mail or telephone at 1 888 550-6333.
Make a record of all the steps you make and how much it costs to restore the situation and avoid it happening again.
