Canadian Consumer Groups React to NDP Plan to Create a Minister for Consumer Protection
Ottawa, September 25th, 2008 – The New Democratic Party made an announcement on consumer protection today as part of the federal election campaign. In Kelowna, BC, NDP Leader Jack Layton said his party is committed to creating a Minister for Consumer Protection and taking a number of measures to combat gas gouging.

Canadian consumer groups have long advocated for increased measures to protect consumers and to ensure there are significant opportunities for their voices to be heard within government and in corporate boardrooms across the country.

Some immediate reaction from leading Canadian consumer organizations:

- "One thing that unites Canadians is that we are all consumers: a ministry to protect our interests as consumers is welcome," said Michael Janigan, Executive Director and General Counsel of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre.

- "The protection of the consumers of Canada has been underserved by the federal government and a ministry to protect consumers is long overdue," said Bill Huzar, President of Board of Directors of Consumers Council of Canada.

- "Any steps taken to safeguard consumer interests are most welcome but we would like to see more details," said Anu Bose of Option consommateurs.
