Montréal, November 20th, 2009 –
Option consommateurs believes that the code of conduct proposed this morning by the Canadian credit and debit card industry will do nothing to improve protection for consumers.
“Unfortunately, our experience with codes of conduct shows us that that they don’t work,” says Michel Arnold, General Director of Option consommateurs. Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty did a good job of identifying the problems, but the solution is inadequate.” In addition, the suggested measures are more addressed to merchants than to consumers. During the upcoming public consultations, Option consommateurs intends to put consumers’ interests to the fore in addition to pushing for regulation.
Created in 1983, Option Consommateurs is a not-for-profit association dedicated to the defence and promotion of consumers’ rights. It has initiated thirty class-action suits and closely monitors issues related to the energy sector, the agri-food industry, financial services and business practices.
