Product Safety Bill weakened by the Senate, deeply regrets Option consommateurs
Montréal, December 16th, 2009 – Option consommateurs deeply regrets the Senate’s decision to adopt an amended version of the Bill C-6, the Canadian Consumer Product Safety Act.

We believe that this vitally important bill was modified because its opponents chose to present it as infringing on the civil liberties and interests of manufacturers and merchants, and not because of its primary objective, which is to establish a modern regulatory framework with respect to the safety of consumer products.

Supporters of Bill C-6 hope this is only a postponement, since the bill has been returned to the House of Commons to be discussed again, where it was passed unanimously last June. Canada continues to lag behind its major trading partners in the area of product safety.
